  • Global Alginate Market Size, Trends & Growth Opportunity, By Type (High M, and High G), By Product (Sodium alginate, Calcium Alginate, Potassium Alginate, Propylene Glycol Alginate, and Others), By Application (Food & Beverages, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, and Others), By Region and Forecast from 2022- 2027
    Global Alginate Market
Global Alginate market was valued at US$ 980.3 Mn in 2021 and it is expected to reach at US$ 1918.6 Mn by 2027, growing at CAGR 9.30 % during the period, 2022-2027.
The food industry's increasing demand for alginate due to its strong gelling properties is expected to drive market growth. Over the forecast period, the market is expected to be driven by the increasing use of sodium and calcium alginate fibers for wound care in pharmaceutical. The use of alginate in the food and beverage industry is permitted by major regulatory agencies such as the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) and the European Commission, which is expected to boost product demand.
Market Drivers: Rise in demand in Food Industry
The rise in demand for alginate in the food industry due to its strong gelling properties is driving the global alginate market. Alginate has functional properties such as thickening, gelling, stabilizing, emulsifying, and film-forming. Furthermore, alginate is extracted from natural seaweeds and is one of the safest food additives in the food industry, as certified by FAO/WHO. Brown seaweed is used to extract sodium alginate. The ingredient is used to stabilize yoghurt, ice cream, cream, and cheese. It also serves as an emulsifier and thickener in pudding, jam, salad dressing, tomato juice, and canned goods. Alginate is used to hydrate bread, cool, noodles, and frozen products. Alginate can also be used to keep frozen fish fresh. Calcium alginate coatings and films are capable of preserving frozen fish. It is especially useful in oily fish, which becomes rancid smelling due to oxidation even when frozen quickly.
Restraints: Availability of substitute can hinder the alginate market
Because of its advantageous properties, such as biocompatibility and ease of gelation, alginate is a biomaterial with numerous applications in biomedical science and engineering. However, there are only a few materials that can be used as an alginate substitute.
Zhermack Inc., a manufacturer of impression materials for dental clinicians and high-tech solutions for dental laboratories, announced the introduction of the new material "Freealgin" in September 2017, which can be used as an alternative to alginate. Freealgin is a highly dimensionally stable material with no pouring time constraints, multi-casting capabilities, safe disinfection, and high tear resistance. Preliminary, removable prosthesis, orthodontic, antagonists, and temporary impressions are all good uses for Freealgin. The availability of substitutes reduces demand in the global alginate market.
Global Alginate Market Share Analysis, By Product
Sodium alginate is expected to create significant opportunities over the forecast period. Sodium Alginate has the highest use and demand as it is soluble in hot and cold water with strong agitation and can help in thickening and binding. Sodium alginate is also used in the food industry to increase the viscosity and as an emulsifier. Alginate is also used in indigestion tablets, and it has no distinguishable flavor. The global demand for sodium alginates is increased due to its various industrial applications such as ceramics, paper textile, and pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, along with food & beverage industry.
Global Alginate Market Share Analysis, By Application
Food and pharmaceutical industry vertical are prime end use industry for alginate.  Alginate has superior properties in terms of mild gelation conditions and simple functionalization, biocompatibility, low toxicity, biodegradability, non-antigenicity and chelating ability, as well as relatively low cost. Due to these properties, alginates have been widely used in a variety of pharmaceutical applications such as tissue engineering and drug delivery systems.
Global Alginate Market Share Analysis, By Region
The global alginate market is dominated by North America and Europe. Emerging countries are becoming the leading exporters of alginates to North American and European markets. Because of the region's increased consumption of processed and convenience foods, Asia-Pacific is one of the fastest-growing markets. Furthermore, Asia-Pacific is a significant producer and exporter of alginates. Alginates are commonly found in sauces, processed foods, dressings, and dairy products in North America and Europe. When compared to developed countries, the pharmaceutical industry in developing countries remains untapped.
