    Algaecide products and algal control services have grown in popularity in recent years as a result of the uncontrolled growth of algal blooms in freshwater lakes and marine coastlines and estuaries. Toxins produced by algal blooms are considered hazardous to humans, marine and freshwater environments. As a result, various preventive and control measures for algae treatment are propelling the global algaecides market forward.
    Algaecides are chemical compounds that contain active ingredients that kill algae and/or prevent it from growing in a pool. Algaecides with copper ions as the active ingredient, containing a chelated copper ion, are available, as are algaecides with quaternary ammonium compounds (referred to as "quats") or polymeric quaternary ammonium compounds (referred to as "poly-quats"). The use of algaecide has advantages and disadvantages, with potential staining and foaming being the most common issues. Furthermore, the correct algaecide with the correct algal type is required because algaecides are not universal.
    Many species of filamentous, planktonic, and branched algae are controlled or suppressed using algaecides. It can be either selective or non-selective towards algae. Selectivity is affected by species, application timing and dose, water chemistry, and product formulation. Their mechanisms of action differ, but they are all considered "contact" pesticides, which means they only harm the algal cells and filaments that come into contact with or are exposed to dissolved algaecide, with little intercellular movement. Algaecides are also used to control algal growth in ponds, lakes, waters, reservoirs, stock tanks, and irrigation conveyance systems. They can be sprayed onto an algal mat, applied as granular crystals or pellets, or injected directly into the water column.

    Algaecides are chemical compounds that contain active ingredients that kill algae and/or prevent it from growing in a pool. Algae growth is a common problem in swimming pools, and pool owners must deal with it several times a year. Algae spores are deposited by rain or even human contact, and algae thrive in the presence of carbon dioxide, warm weather, and off-balance pH levels. Algae can cause green water or slimy deposits in swimming pools that are yellow, green, pink, or black.

The use of algaecides on waste water discharged into public water bodies requires the approval of local authorities in order to ensure that the active ingredients used are not sensitive to non-target species, which may affect the use of algaecides.
    For example, the United States Environmental Protection Agency has approved numerous formulations and manufacturers of algaecides for use in and around aquatic habitats. Algaecides must be applied in accordance with the full product label as registered by the Environmental Protection Agency of the United States (USEPA).
